Frequently asked questions about getting organized

What does a professional organizer do?

I'll help you to identify the spaces or systems that get you stuck, develop a plan to address these areas, and work with you to apply successfully simple organizing solutions to your spaces.  This is my business, and I'll bring knowledge and expertise in proven organizing methods and products to the table. One of the greatest benefits of working with an organizer is that I can help you see your situation from a new perspective, and can help you come up with solutions you may not have thought of on your own. Also, I'll be there to keep you motivated, stay focused, and get through your project more quickly than on your own. I can work with you side-by-side to clear out the clutter and implement your organizing solutions, or I can assess your situation and develop a step-by-step plan you can implement on your own.  Whatever your preference, I can customize my services to meet your needs.

Why should I hire someone to help me with my project?

Each of us has strengths and capabilities in different areas, and being organized is no different.  Personally, I know that I could never be an artist or an accountant because that is just not how my brain works and I don't feel badly about that. But for some reason, women in particular think being organized is a skill they should automatically have, and feel guilty when they can't figure it out on their own. So instead of beating yourself up about it, ask yourself "Can I really afford NOT to hire an organizer?"  After all, how much is your peace of mind worth?

How does the organizing process work?

The process will begin with a free phone consultation session for 15 - 30 minutes. We'll discuss your situation in greater detail, allowing me to offer ideas on how to address your organizing project, and decide on the best option for providing services. If you decide to move forward, I will email you a proposal that outlines what we'll work on, how I'll be assisting in the project, and what project package you've chosen so we're both on the same page. At the first appointment, the process often begins by sorting and assessing items currently in your space. Once you have decided what items will be kept in the area, I’ll present you with a plan of action for establishing successfully simple systems to achieve and maintain order in the future. The final step is to restore your items to their newly organized "homes", so you are left with an inviting and functional space.

How long will my organizing project take?

The length of your project will be determined at the time of your free phone consultation. Each project is unique depending on how many spaces are involved, the current condition of each space, the pace you're comfortable moving at, and what your final goals are. However, you’ll find the process moves much more quickly when you have a partner, and significant progress can be made in just a few hours.

When interviewing potential organizers, it's important to make sure that person is a member of NAPO like myself.  It's important because members of the National Association of Professional Organizers are bound to uphold an industry code of ethics that helps ensure you are working with someone that holds themselves to a high standard of conduct.

Beyond that, the process of working with an organizer is a very personal one.  You're inviting me into your home to see your life on a very intimate level.  As a former social worker, I'm sensitive to those dynamics and will work to make you feel completely comfortable with the process before we begin. We'll spend quite a bit of time talking at the beginning so that I get a full picture of your situation, which helps me come up with the best organizing solutions for you personally. I will never pass any judgement on your circumstances, and will be there to help you work through those times when you might get stuck, feel overwhelmed, or simply don't know the best way to donate or dispose of an item.  I also have a great sense of humor, so we'll have some fun along the way too!
